The infant Tuthmosis III would become king under the temporary guidance of his stepmother, the dowager Queen Hatshepsut.įor a couple of years Hatshepsut behaved as a totally conventional regent, acknowledging the young Tuthmosis III as the one and only pharaoh. Under normal circumstances the royal mother would act as regent for her son unfortunately the mother in this case was a lady of unacceptably low status. Again there was a prince in the royal harem, but this time the prince was a baby. When Tuthmosis II died suddenly, after a mere three years on the throne, a dynastic crisis threatened. Hatshepsut, now queen of Egypt, bore her husband/brother a daughter, Princess Neferure, but no son. ![]()

I found myself comparing it to Uglies, instead of experiencing it at face value. It’s hard to judge it as a book in its own right, though, because it belongs to this preexisting universe. While there’s still some slang, it didn’t feel as juvenile, and overall I liked the prose a lot more than I was expecting. ![]() ![]() I suppose because I associated it with Uglies, I expected it to have a similar writing style, but it’s very clear that Westerfeld has improved as a writer since he wrote the original series, and it’s more enjoyable to read as a result. God or no God, I wasn’t giving up Christmas! Then we tried the Muslims (or the “Black Muslims,” as Momma called them). They were cool, till I learned they didn’t celebrate Christmas. I got to go with her on some of those searches. Still, Momma said she wanted more from God, so for the past couple of years she’d been searching for more. In fact, her daddy was a Methodist preacher. My momma knew God-she was raised a Methodist. “I didn’t know much about God, ’cept that if you pissed Him off, He’d getcha one day. ![]() ![]() I write about the desert and I feel the radiant heat of the sun on my skin. I write about the mountains and I can almost hear the swish of sweet grass in the breeze. I write about surfing and I taste salt on my lips. I remember every little thing and write them down and for me, writing about them is almost like being there again. ![]() When I’m on the road, I so often feel like my eyes are just conduits through which the landscapes flow, filling my head until I could burst. But I also enjoy writing about places – travel. I’ve published two books and I’m working on publishing a third. My fingers hit the keys and fly, and everything I didn’t know how exactly to put into words finds a voice. For me, the written word surpasses fleeting conversation. ![]() I never really chose writing, it always just came as something of a sixth sense the medium through which I could understand myself and the world around me. When people ask me why I write, or why I started writing, or when I decided I wanted to be an author, it’s always a hard question for me to answer.
